Just because school got out early on Friday didn't mean things were going to go lightly for the Garden City High School wrestling team. It was the last day of the first week of practice -- and only two more weeks before the Buffs open at the Amarillo (Texas) Team Duals on Dec. 4-5. "It's been a really good week of practice, so far," GCHS coach Monte Moser said Friday while his wrestlers were practicing right after GCHS' 11 a.m. student release.

Twenty-one of the 22 matches between varsity, JV and freshmen Fighting Knights wrestlers were decided by pin Friday. "As long as they keep fighting, that's ok. It's hard for them to be aggressive against each other, they're friends," coach JV coach Ted Nesmith. "Nobody disappointed out there. Even when a wrestler was on his back, they continued to fight. That impressed me."

The Person wrestling team picked up where it had left off last season by defeating another non-conference opponent to open the 2009-10 campaign. The Rockets did not lose a duals meet outside the Piedmont Athletic Conference all last winter, and the trend continued with a 43-19 victory over the Bartlett Yancey Buccaneers in Wednesday's season-opener at Rocket Gymnasium. Five of Person's eight match-victories were by pin.
